The picture above show the ‘new’ ground, mainly on the town side of the river created by both deposition by the river  or deliberately.  The ‘new’ ‘Islands’ between bridge street and Gote bridge have been built up by the river since the 1940’s.  

The picture below shows the ‘new’ land beside the Wordsworth House garden wall. IN 1950 the man would be walking in water and be at least six feet lower.

The first pillar is hidden by the trees and I estimate that about 30% of the river width has been lost.

Adding that to the raised river bed indicated by the islands suggests that the rivers could flood if the rainfall was heavy enough.
